One room doing five jobs at once

A studio is not a small apartment. It is a bedroom, a living room, an office and a kitchen sharing one glass face. Every other home lets you solve rooms one at a time. A studio makes you solve them together, at one window, with one decision.

That cuts both ways. It is the easiest home to get wrong and the cheapest to get right. Most studios here have two or three windows in total. Get the main one correct and the rest is detail.

The bed sits in the main light

In most Dubai studios the bed ends up beside the glass or facing it, because there is nowhere else for it to go. For much of the year the sun is up before half past five, and it arrives on unshaded floor-to-ceiling glass onto the place you sleep.

So your main window carries a bedroom requirement at night and a living room requirement all day. That is why the single sheer most studios are sold does not work. A sheer softens glare; it will not let you sleep past sunrise.

And what darkens a room is coverage, not fabric. Light arrives over the top of the track, down both sides and under the hem, around the curtain rather than through it. In a studio that matters more than usual, because there is no other room to escape into. Our blackout page sets out the three leaks and what closes each one.

After dark the window works in reverse

Privacy runs from the bright side to the dark side. At two in the afternoon your room is darker than the street, so an open weave gives you a view and privacy at once. At eight in the evening with the lights on, that reverses exactly, and the tower opposite reads the room in outline. In a one-room home, that includes the bed. It is not an argument against sheers — it is why the layering decision comes before anything is fitted. Our sheers page is worth ten minutes first.

One track, two layers, decided at the start

The main window almost always wants a sheer and a blackout layer, and that is a double track. It has to be specified as a double from the beginning, because a double bracket carries more load and stands further off the wall. Adding the second layer later usually means a new track and new fixings. Tell us at the measurement even if you only fit one layer now.

Stack width, because you have no spare wall

Stack is the space a curtain takes up when open. It does not disappear; it concertinas into a bundle at the end of the track, and on a tall window that bundle is wider than people picture.

In a villa nobody notices. In a studio, where the glass is most of one wall and that wall is most of your storage, a wide stack sits across the view you are paying for. That is the practical case for a wave heading here. A pinch pleat is a fine curtain and the wrong one for this room.

The kitchenette, and why fabric loses there

A studio kitchenette is open to the room and a few steps from the bed. Cooking oil travels. It wipes off a flat blind and settles permanently into a curtain, and a curtain holding last week's cooking is in the room you sleep in. So a roller or zebra blind there, not fabric. Same for a bathroom pane. Which blind suits which window covers the difference.

What we would tell you not to buy

Not blackout at the kitchenette. It is a small window at the end you do not sleep in. That money belongs at the main glass.

Not motorisation. Motors earn their place on windows you cannot reach or spans too heavy to pull daily. A studio has neither, and a motor adds a battery to charge and a device to pair. The long version is in the motor guide.

Not a heavy interlined fabric in a rented studio. It loads the track, widens the stack, and rarely moves with you, because drops almost never match in the next apartment.

Choose your level

  • Essential — quality blackout and sheer fabrics
  • Signature — premium fabrics, three-pass blackout lining
  • Atelier — luxury fabrics, motorised main window, smart-home ready

Every level includes the correct track for your window, rated for the fabric weight. We do not fit a cheaper track at a cheaper level.

How it works, and what the price includes

A supervisor visits free, about 45 minutes, with the fabric books held against your own glass in your own light. Every window is measured twice. Within 24 hours you receive one written price per finished window — fabric, making, lining, track, brackets, the correct fixings for your wall, delivery, installation and hand-dressing all inside it. Nothing is added later, and the quote stands for 30 days with no follow-up calls. Installation is two to five working days from the measurement, on a date written into your contract rather than a range; if we miss it, your first professional curtain clean is free. One-year warranty on mechanical parts and labour, and every window we measure stays on file permanently, so a single panel can be replaced years later without a new survey. All seven emirates, no travel surcharge. See how it works and what curtains really cost in Dubai.

Questions studio tenants ask

Can I skip the sheer and just have blackout?
If nothing looks in, yes. If a tower is close, you will keep the blackout shut all day for privacy and live in the dark.

Will curtains make the studio feel smaller?
Done badly, yes. A track at window height with a wide stack across the glass shrinks the room. Ceiling-fixed, running past the reveal, does the opposite.

The developer left a blind. Is that enough at the bed end?
Usually not. A blind is cut narrower than the opening so it can move, leaving a bright line down each edge. Side channels close it, and they must be specified before it is made.

I am renting for a year. Is made-to-measure worth it?
For the main window, generally yes. The panels come down in an afternoon and go in a box; the track and fixings stay behind.

Can you do the main window now and the rest later?
Yes. The quote is one price per finished window, and your measurements stay on file, so there is no second survey.
