Three-Pass Blackout Curtains
One written price per finished window, after we’ve measured — fabric, lining, track, fixings, fitting and warranty all inside it. Nothing added later.
Three-pass is the lining that earns the word blackout. Three coats of acrylic are laid onto the back of the lining cloth, and the one that does the work is the middle coat, which is black. Light entering the outer coat hits it and stops. Nothing passes through the cloth.
Why the middle layer is black
A single white coating scatters light rather than stopping it: the room behind goes dim, not dark. Black absorbs instead of scattering. But nobody wants a black lining showing from the street, so the black is buried — one coat of white or grey each side of it. That is the whole trick, and it is why the number of passes matters and the colour on the front does not.
Two-pass linings exist and are sold here as blackout. They are two white coats with no black core: dense, better than nothing, and not blackout. If a quote says "blackout lining" without saying three-pass, ask which it is.
How to check it yourself
Hold the sample to a bright light and look through it. True three-pass shows nothing — not a glow, not a warm patch. Then look at the back: a matt coated surface rather than a woven one, slightly rubbery to the thumb. An uncoated dim-out lining glows and feels like cloth all the way through. The full comparison is on our blackout page.
The honest caveat
Three-pass lining makes the fabric opaque. It does not make the room dark. Light still arrives over the track, down the sides and under the hem, and on a bright Dubai morning those edges are what wake you at half past five — not the cloth.
So the lining is half the specification and coverage is the other half: a ceiling-fixed track or valance for the top, a track wider than the reveal with a generous return and centre overlap for the sides, and the drop specified rather than assumed for the hem. We settle that at the measurement. A lining sold without that conversation is sold to disappoint you.
Where it belongs
Bedrooms, nurseries, and any room used by someone who sleeps in the day — night shifts, jet lag, a baby napping at two in the afternoon. Media rooms, where a screen has to compete with the sun. Anywhere the honest requirement is dark rather than dim.
It is usually the wrong buy in a living room, where you want the light down rather than off, and unnecessary in a home office, where the problem is screen glare. Those rooms want dim-out or a sheer, and we will say so rather than upsell you.
Fabric, heading and colour
Because the lining does the light control, the face fabric is a free choice. A pale linen with three-pass behind it darkens exactly as well as a charcoal velvet, and will not show fading the way a deep shade does under this sun; the reasoning is in choosing curtain fabric for a Dubai home. A wave heading suits it well, and where the room also wants daylight the blackout hangs behind a sheer on a double track.
How we work
A supervisor visits your home free, with the fabric books, and holds the lining against your own window so you can see what it does. Every window is measured twice. One written price per finished window within 24 hours, nothing added later, fitted on the date written into your contract rather than a range, with a one-year mechanical and labour warranty. Book a free measurement.
Questions we get asked
Is three-pass the same as three layers of fabric?
No. It is three coats of acrylic on one lining cloth. Adding a third fabric layer is interlining, which is a different thing and does a different job.
Will it make my room completely dark?
The cloth will pass no light. Whether the room is dark depends on coverage at the top, sides and hem, which we specify at the measurement.
Does it feel stiff?
Slightly firmer than an uncoated lining, which is part of why it hangs well. On a full drop you will not notice it once the curtain is dressed.
